Pressestimmen

“Sex At Dawn has helped me understand myself and the world so much more clearly.” (Ilana Glazer, co-creator of Broad City)“Sex At Dawn is the single most important book about human sexuality since Alfred Kinsey unleashed Sexual Behavior in the Human Male on the American public in 1948.” (Dan Savage)“Funny, witty, and light ... Sex at Dawn is a scandal in the best sense, one that will have you reading the best parts aloud and reassessing your ideas about humanity’s basic urges well after the book is done.” (Newsweek)“Sex At Dawn challenges conventional wisdom about sex in a big way... This is a provocative, entertaining, and pioneering book. I learned a lot from it and recommend it highly.” (Andrew Weil, M.D., author of Healthy Aging)“Sex At Dawn is a provocative and engaging synthesis... that has the added benefit of being a joy to read.... A book sure to generate discussion, and one likely to produce more than a few difficult conversations with family marriage counselors.” (Eric Michael Johnson, Seed Magazine)“You clearly have an exciting book on your hands, whether people agree with it or not: these are issues that will need debating over and over before we will arrive at a resolution.” (Frans de Waal, author of The Age of Empathy)“A wonderfully provocative and well-written book which completely re-evaluates human sexual behaviour and gets to the root of many of our social and psychological ills.” (Steve Taylor, author of The Fall and Waking From Sleep)“One of the most original books I’ve read in years, Sex at Dawn manages to be both enormously erudite and wildly entertaining―even, frequently, hilarious. . . . A must-read for anyone interested in where our sexual impulses come from.” (Tony Perrottet, author of Napoleon's Privates)“This paradigm-shifting book is a thoroughly original discussion of the origins and nature of human sexuality... These authors have a gift for making complex material reader-friendly, filling each chapter with humor and passion as well as dozens of revolutionary insights.” (Stanley Krippner, Ph.D.)“Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jetha have written the essential corrective to the evolutionary psychology literature...” (Stanton Peele, Ph.D.)

Buchrückseite

In this controversial, thought-provoking, and brilliant book, renegade thinkers Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jethá debunk almost everything we “know” about sex, weaving together convergent, frequently overlooked evidence from anthropology, archaeology, primatology, anatomy, and psychosexuality to show how far from human nature monogamy really is. In Sex at Dawn, the authors expose the ancient roots of human sexuality while pointing toward a more optimistic future illuminated by our innate capacities for love, cooperation, and generosity.

either you will love or hate this book. assuming you are truly interested in WHY "classic nuclear families" (i.e. one woman, one man, kid(s)) fail at an agonizingly astonishing rate of 40-50% - then you MUST read this.in summary: the authors try to emulate aliens and pretend they are observing human sexual and social behavior the first time. or like the first primatologists, who began studying primate's sexual behavior in the wild. (and primates we are!)then, they try to either eliminate or reverse any subjectivity (which they call "flintstonization"), which could cause observations to be warped or biased so that they better fit western/christian/modern culture and values.reading this book was a little like: "if you want to see the flowers' true colors, you need to take off your sunglasses".the key messages have been discussed at length by others here, so I don't need to. but let me warn (or intrigue) you: many of the findings are... controversial, startling, funny, absurd and eye opening to say the least!my main lesson learned: sex is simultaneously totally over- and underrated.underrated: sex is (should be!) as important as the air we breathe, the sun we share and the water we drink. it is totally essential to our well-being and all around us and inside us, all the time. men and women alike. as such, we should we enjoying it whenever we can, indeed whenever we want to. women and men.overrated: just as the air we breathe, sex must not be limited or traded. it is literally "priceless". sex ought to have NO VALUE - which would make it an essential and ubiquitous commodity - just like air. all this fuss about how important sex is and how womens' value is measured based on their promiscuity is just ridiculous. as if someone breathing more air or drinking more water were less valuable than another who doesn't.If we finally acknowledged that sex is as important as air and should as readly available to anyone who wants/needs it (as air), many relationship, moral and social problems would just evaporate. in to thin air. :-Dafter reading this, men will hopefully never use the term "cheap whore" ever again, and women will finally understand that sex is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, nor something to dole out like a reward or rare and valuable tradable commodity.even if you are an ultra-conservative, religious and strictly monogamous person, you MUST read this book. if only to start up great discussions and arguments at parties. :-)EDIT: if English is not (one of) your primary language(s), you may find this hard to read. the language is very colloquial and reads more like a conversation, less like an essay. while that makes it highly entertaining and accessible for English speakers, it reduces readability for others. (tried this book on two Germans, both had to give up because it was too hard to understand.)

wao, a huge amount of convincing data and science.a must read.Ever since, I am reflecting a lot about behaviour and sexuality.

Well written food for thought. This is my second time purchasing this book as it is often lent out. After reading it, I wanted to hear more, consequently I am an avid listener of the (not directly related) podcast by the author, called Tangentially Speaking. I can recommend both...

fascinating information that makes life much easier and relaxed. There are several interviews the author has given, i recommend watching the ones on TYT (youtube). They're each about 30 minutes and outline the basic ideas elaborated on in the book

Sehr spannend und es bringt informationen, die man sonst kaum findet. auch interessat geschrieben. kann ich nur empfehlen. leider nur auf englisch, aber die mühe wert...

An illuminating and progressive text, convincingly argued with a touch of humour too. I could read this book anywhere it was so lucidly written. In fact, I could hardly put it down (dawn :-)). The authors have a great talent for turning a taboo topic into something everyone can talk about, and have fun doing so.
